The Rolex of Presidents
After having marketed a good number of professional models, it is in 1956 that Rolex introduced the Day-Date which is the first chronometer wristwatch, water-resistant and automatic, and offers a modern calendar displaying the day in full as well as the date. It was very quickly adopted by the political and managerial class and was immediately recognizable on the wrist, in particular thanks to its emblematic President's bracelet. A name that corresponds to the stature of the personalities who have worn it, has earned the Day-Date the nickname "the watch for Presidents".
The Day-Date interests a large number of collectors around the world because of its robustness and elegance. For nearly 60 years, it has remained one of the most popular and sought-after Rolex models. The reference presented in the video is the reference 1803, which was part of the second series of Day-Date marketed in 1958. The 1803 is identifiable by its fluted bezel. This version is in 18-carat yellow gold and has a champagne-colored "pie-pan" dial.
This version dates from the 1960s and features a self-winding mechanical movement, the caliber 1556, certified chronometer. The window is in French, which is quite rare, its 36 mm Oyster case creates almost magical proportions on any size of wrist. The watch is very comfortable to wear, especially with this leather strap. The president bracelet will be the subject of another video.
At that time and even today, this model was one of the most expensive of the brand. The Day-Date is made exclusively of precious metals in gold or platinum. In addition to this is the President bracelet which is only available on the Day-Date.
As of 2008, the Day Date will be replaced by Day-Date II. Although more contemporary, the latter has a sober and classic design. Still equipped with the function that made it famous, it is enlarged and revisited for a more modern look, but one that remains in the spirit of the brand.
This iconic model represents prestige and grandeur, and has an unprecedented charm.
