The Rolex Datejust Reference Guide
Rolex model numbers range from four to six digits. The number is located at 12 o'clock between the lugs and under the bracelet. The first two or three digits describe the type of watch.
4-digit references: If the watch has 4 digits, the last number corresponds to the bezel.
For five-digit model numbers: the second last, i.e. the 4th, defines the type of bezel (with a few exceptions) and the last indicates the metal of the watch case.
The 6-digit references: These figures can also provide information on the production period: around 2000, Rolex began adding a 1 in front of certain model references. all steel, smooth bezel.
